For decades the normal lens for 35mm photography, the one suggested for nearly every Photo 101 class has been a 50mm f/1.8 lens.  Canon’s version, the 50mm f/1.8II for EF mount lenses has been out for what seems like forever.  It works.  It’s versatile.  I think everyone should own one.
